PostgreSQL is an enterprise class, open source object-relational database system which has been in active development for more than 15 years.  The database runs on all major operating systems and has earned a reputation for reliability, data integrity and correctness. SQLite / SpatiaLite

SQLite is an cross-platform, compact in-process library and embedded SQL database engine.   SQLite does not have a separate server process. Rather, SQLite reads and writes directly to ordinary disk files as a complete SQL database with multiple tables, indices, triggers, and views - all contained in a single disk file.
